Foil Drive Battery Grease

Foil Drive Battery Dielectric Grease is developed to lubricate electrical connections, to prevent corrosion and improve connection.

Here you will learn why we have a battery grease and where and how to apply it.

Warning: Use ONLY the provided Foil Drive Battery Grease on your unit.

Do NOT use any other brand of dielectric grease on your battery or plugs as this will void warranty!

What is dielectric grease and why is it used?

Dielectric grease is a special grease that is designed to lubricate electrical connections to prevent corrosion and improve connection.

The continued use of this grease is imperative to keep your unit protected for the long run.

Where do I use the grease?

a. The battery connection plug

b. Plug inside unit

c. Removable motor plug

d. Blanking plug

How often do I apply it?

We advise to apply it very time you are entering the ocean!

Salt water is very corrosive to your foil drive components

If you are foiling in fresh water, you can extend this out, but don’t facilitate and apply to every second use.

After you have applied the grease generously to your battery several times, you can reduce the amount applied as the grease will accumulate on the plug.

Always ensure the terminals are covered in grease on the battery and in the housing.

How do I apply it?

A. On the front of the battery, apply a generous amount to the connector.

B. By applying a generous amount on the battery connector, all you need to do it grab the battery and push it into the plug inside the unit.

This will now put dielectric grease on the receiving plug inside.

You can push it in and out a few times to cover the internal plug.

C. Apply a layer across the three pins on the unit, and another layer across the pins on the motor plug.

D. Apply a small amount on the blanking plug when placing it back on the unit when not in use.

What do I do when the grease finishes?

There are two tubes of the dielectric grease included in your unit at the time of purchase.

Before you run out completely, please purchase more tubes from your local dealer.

Grease is available in 2 sizes:

Cleaning Your Foil Drive

What, when and WHY to clean your Foil Drive

Saltwater and sand are one of the most brutal operating environments for electronics.

Keep all components out of the sand and never turn your board upside down with the electronics box open.

Sand in spinning motors and bearings can cause excessive wear and damage to waterproof coatings.

Always ensure that your system is clear of sand or debris before heading out for a session!

Follow the instructions below to correctly maintain your gear.

It is very important that you complete the following procedures:

AFTER EVERY USE

1. As soon as possible, rinse the system with fresh water to remove initial saltwater, sand, and debris.

Gen1 Users should ensure the electronics box lid is closed! Do not rinse your battery!

Gen2 Users should ensure the nose cone is still latched when rinsing your unit.

2. Pull the rotor off the stator and give both the rotor and stator a good rinse.

(For pre 2023 Assist and PLUS kits, you will need to remove the circlip to be able to do this).

3. You can use a dry towel to wipe down the internals of the electronics box if humidity has built up moisture.

ONCE YOU ARE HOME

1. Submerge your motor in a bucket of warm, fresh water and spool the motor to thoroughly flush it out.

2. Submerge your controller in warm, fresh water for 5 minutes. Remove and shake out water.

3. Inspect power cable, latches, cable gland and the box seal for any damage.

4. Ensure battery, internal cavity of box and power connector are dry and sand free.

5. For Gen2, always ensure you leave the nose cone off, and the battery DISCONNECTED!

ONCE A WEEK, MINIMUM

1. Remove all components including box, motor, pod, puck, propeller hub and controller mount and rinse everything with warm, fresh water.

2. Check your system and ensure your bearings are running smoothly with no large chips or cracks present in the hub or propellers.

3. When re-assembling, this is a good time to submerge and run your motor in warm water once again.

After pulling everything apart, stubborn salt should now come off.

Don’t forget that much like any equipment exposed to salt, maintenance and due care is required.

ELECTRONICS BOX AND CABLE GLAND

If on inspection during your routine cleaning, you find you have damaged or worn-out parts, check out Foil Drive Help Center articles for repairs and maintenance here.

NOTE: When placing the rotor back on the stator, you MUST use two hands to slowly guide it back on.

Once the magnets grab, you must ensure the rotor does not slam against the stator otherwise you risk damaging your bearings.

Foil Drive

Foil Drive

Foil Drive represents a significant advancement in the world of foiling, providing riders with an eco-friendly, efficient, and powerful way to extend their time on the water, explore new terrains, and improve their skills.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or a newcomer to the sport, the versatility and ease of use of these system make them a valuable addition to any foiling adventure. This is a pioneering technology designed to assist and enhance the performance of hydrofoils. It's used in watersports like Surf foil, SUP (Stand-Up Paddle) foiling, and Downwind foil. Since foiling has gained immense popularity due to its smooth and efficient glide across water with reduced drag, we developed an electric boost to foil riders. Our goal is to enable all types of foilers greater versatility and range. Our systems are compact and sleek, integrating seamlessly with most hydrofoil setups.

The purpose of Foil Drive is to provide motorized assistance to riders, making it easier to:

Catch Waves: For surfers and SUP foilers, the drive helps generate enough speed to catch waves with minimal paddling effort, even in low swell conditions. It gives experienced riders a burst of speed to rise onto the foil quicker, reducing the need for manual paddling or pumping. Extend Sessions: It significantly reduces fatigue by allowing riders to continue riding without exhausting their legs or upper body muscles. Uphill Foiling: In wing foiling or downwind foiling, the motorized drive allows riders to cover longer distances against the wind or currents. Training and Learning Aid: For beginners, the drive offers a stable and controlled environment to practice foiling techniques without requiring perfect wave or wind conditions.

The core components of a Foil Drive Kit include:

Electric Motor: A small, powerful electric motor mounted at the rear of the hydrofoil mast. This motor is protected by a durable, waterproof casing, making it corrosion-resistant and designed to withstand the harsh marine environment. Propeller: A specially designed propeller, attached to the motor, which provides the thrust needed to assist the rider when needed. Battery Pack: A compact battery that powers the motor. It’s usually stored in a waterproof casing and mounted on the board or in a specially designed backpack that the rider wears. Remote Control: A handheld or wrist-mounted remote control that allows the rider to control the power output of the motor. The remote communicates wirelessly with the motor and battery to provide precise speed control. Connection Cables: Durable, waterproof cables that connect the battery pack to the motor and other electronic components. Visually, the system is low-profile, keeping the board's aesthetics intact while ensuring that the weight distribution doesn’t affect the balance of the board.

Foil Drive Kits systems come in 3 different models.
