Foils to Downwind Freeride

Foil Foils F One
Foil Foils F One

We develop this foils guide to help you choose your F-ONE foil according to your chosen program.

Always keep in mind that your ideal setup will vary depending on your skill level, your weight, and the conditions where you will ride most often.

F-ONE  foil range is the most performant, comprehensive, modular, and accessible in the market.

There are some aspects you should take in consideration when you’re choosing the best foil for you.

Basically you can consider that  hydrofoils have 2 parts:

The Plane, which is the set of Front Wing + Monobloc Tail (some versions still have Fuselage + Stabilizer separated)

The Mast Pack, which is the set of the Mast, with Mast Top Plate and the Titan Mast Foot.

In this Guide, first we’ll focus on the choice of the Plane and then we’ll take a look at different Mast options.

Foils to Downwind Freeride – Aspect Ratio

The Aspect Ratio (AR) is the key to understand how we constructed our range of foils.

We’ll start by giving you the concept, as it should be your first guide when you are choosing the Front Wing for the Plane.

The AR is the ratio between surface area and wingspan of the Front Wing.Foil foils F One Aspect Ratio

In general, foils with a low- to mid- AR will be a bit thicker and rounder. They are more stable, turn and pivot well, have plenty of lift, and will help you take-off easily at low speeds or in low wind conditions.

The foils with a high AR will be thinner and longer, and thus produce less induced drag.

They are highly efficient and will provide a lot of glide and speed.

The higher the AR, the better the foil performs for experienced riders and the further it flies.

However, it also requires more minimum speed to start planing and develop lift. The AR also influences the turning radius of each foil.

With equal areas, a higher AR makes wider turns.

Finally, there is also a link between the swell period and the AR of the foil.

The longer the swell period, the more AR you need.

Foil Front Wing to Downwind Freeride

In this collection, you can start choosing your foil by the aspect ratio of your Front Wing.

We have classified F-One  range in four levels of AR in order to define a program for each foil:

Foil foils F One Aspect ratio

An AR of 5 is the most accessible and is best recommended to learn how to foil.

The most versatile and generally best performing overall is the AR 6.0. Its medium span guarantees maneuverability for surfing and accessible pumping.

When you switch to an AR of 7.0, you increase your maximum speed and will glide further, but the extra span penalizes the maneuverability.

The AR of 9.0 and above is mostly reserved for experienced riders. It offers incredible glide, but you have to be a very efficient rider to maintain sufficient speed all the time, so that the foil keeps flying. It brings good maneuverability, usually under 1000cm².

As we started designing and trying out high aspect ratio foils, we discovered they opened new programs and new possibilities.

Our range of foils for Downwind and Freeride foiling has diferent types of Planes, based on AR.

The range for Downwind and foils starts with the Seven Seas with an AR of 8.0

Foil Seven Seas Carbon Plane

The first step into downwinds is a confortable and easy foil with more glide, more speed, and fantastic upwind potential.

Moving into open seas, the Seven Seas makes it great for surfing the swell and downwinding on small chops or in light winds.

Its optimized design for minimal drag will also reduce the traction in your arms as you travel upwind with a wing.

The next step is the EAGLE and its AR around 9.5, that will let you fly incredibly far and fast.

Foil Eagle Carbon Plane

Its thin profile leads to minimal drag, bringing you an unmatched and seemingly endless glide.

Whether in freefly or downwind, you will be able to go much faster, further, and longer.

Its stability and impressive control will let you fully focus on the entire experience.

The EAGLE will transform your session once you have the level to ride it as fast as it needs to enjoy its full potential.

This foil is a completely new way of using the sea and the swell.

Every chop is becoming more powerful; everything brings more sensation

Finally, the EAGLE’s breathtaking speed has been multiplied with the new EAGLE X and its AR of 12.

A foil specially designed for advanced riders, it is a foil for all who want to push even further into the downwind world.

The EAGLE X is optimized to reach the highest possible speeds while maintaining a very high average speed.

Its glide allows you to fly without stalling, even if you make a small mistake.

Foils to Downwind Freeride – Monobloc Tails

Choosing the right Monobloc Tail is the second step in choosing your best Plane set up.

The tail influences the behavior of the entire plane and will impact your ride.

Simply changing your tail can make your foil setup behave completely differently, and will bring you new sensations and performances.

You can check the chart below to help you choose your F-ONE Monobloc Tail.

How to choose your Tail
How to choose your Tail

Just like when it comes to choosing your front wing, your decision should vary depending on your skill level, your weight, the conditions, and your chosen program.

F-One Monobloc Tails

F-One Monobloc Tails combine the stabilizer and the rear part of the fuselage.

This Monobloc construction improves stiffness and flow efficiency by eliminating connections and providing a more streamlined design.

This premium connection will make your foil more reactive, more stable, and faster.

It also removes two screws, so you can be on the water quicker.

There are a few basic principles to our Monobloc Tails.

Overall, the tails with the bigger surfaces offer more stability, accessibility and are easier to ride, but have added drag.

The smaller tails are faster and more maneuverable, but a bit less stable.

For the same stab surface, a shorter fuselage will bring tighter turns.

However in terms of maneuverability and efficiency, it is more beneficial to choose a smaller stab.

In turn, we have adapted the fuselage length for you so the plane isn’t twitchy, i.e. pitch-sensitive.

Aiming for maximum efficiency, our latest Monobloc Tails hence feature, in general, smaller wings and longer fuselages for a more uniform balance, less drag, and enhanced pitch stability.

All in all, when choosing your Monobloc Tail, keep in mind that the smaller tails will perform better at higher speeds, while the larger ones prove more effective at lower speeds.

In the end, it all depends on what you are doing, and it could also be worth trying different ones for yourself to see how big of an impact a tail makes on your front wing.

Our Monobloc Tails Range is split into four different models: Carving, Carving W, Downwind (DW) and Pumping.

These come in a variety of sizes, and different Aspect Ratios.

Monobloc Tails

You can pair these tails with your Front Wing, depending on with your body type, your chosen discipline, or how much stability you’re looking for.

Monobloc Tail Carving

ASPECT RATIO 8.0
Six sizes: XS 140cm², XS 160cm², XXXS 160cm², XXXS 180cm², XXS 180 cm² and XXS 200cm²
Designed for experienced surf foilers and wing foilers.
Smaller surface area = more speed / Longer fuselage = greater stability
New profile for balanced front/rear leg support

MONOBLOC TAIL CARVING
MONOBLOC TAIL CARVING

With a thin profile and higher aspect ratio, the Carving range is the way to go if you need speed and maneuverability.

These Monobloc Tails will provide a looser, more snappy feeling, as well as a faster pumping pace.

All sizes are equipped with fences on the wingtips to reduce the induced drag and to improve the overall performances and maneuverability.

The Carving profile is quite powerful and provides a great pumping and low end.

This is the weapon of choice for surf foilers who need to pump back to the peak, or for wing foilers who want a comfortable low end.

The smaller sizes benefit from a new profile, leading to a stance slightly more towards the rear.

In turn, these will help you get as close as possible to the feeling of pure surf with greater speed and better control of the foil in the pocket.

The longer fuselage brings stability and enables you to push hard into your turns.

Monobloc Tail Carving W

ASPECT RATIO 8.0
Two sizes: XS 141cm², XS 161cm²
Designed for medium to experienced wing foilers.
Smaller surface area = more speed / Longer fuselage = greater stability.
New profile for balanced front/rear leg support allowing comfort at greater speed and power during carves.

MONOBLOC TAIL CARVING W
MONOBLOC TAIL CARVING W

The Carving W profile was built to provide the best possible pitch stability and steady lift.

No matter the speed, no matter how much you push in the carves, the Carving W tails will hold and stay stable.

These tails are a bit more difficult to pump and hence are more directed toward winging and tow-in.

These tails are made for wing foilers who are looking for higher speeds and more powerful carves.

Thanks to their new profile, reduced surface area and longer fuselage, they provide the best possible balance between front and back foot, with a steady lift at all times.

Monobloc Tail DW

ASPECT RATIO 8.8
Four sizes: XS 145cm², XXS 170cm², XXXS 190cm² and XXS 210cm²
Designed for experienced downwind riders
Smaller surface area = greater speed / longer fuselage = greater stability
Maximum forward projection

MONOBLOC TAIL DW
MONOBLOC TAIL DW

The Monobloc Tails DW provide improved speed as well as greater stability and forward projection so you can perform better with less fatigue.

They are perfect to link waves, and greatly enhance the efficiency and fun of your downwinds.

The smaller sizes benefit from a longer fuselage to provide pitch stability and better forward projection, which is a great advantage in strong wind conditions where the foil will cross bumps without jolting or over-power.

With their thin and optimized designs for minimal drag, these Monobloc Tails make the foil more playful, allowing you to better connect bumps and have more fun carving.

Monobloc Tail Pumping

ASPECT RATIO 7.6
Made for dockstarts and endless pumping sessions
Monobloc construction for better stiffness and reduced turbulence

MONOBLOC TAIL PUMPING
MONOBLOC TAIL PUMPING

As its name indicates, this Monobloc Tail is specific to pump foil and dockstart sessions.

It pairs up perfectly with our JAM foil.

With an aspect ratio of 7.6 and large surface area, this tail offers exceptional pumping abilities and a fantastic glide.

The angle of the stab has been specially designed to optimize weight distribution evenly over the front and back legs, reducing fatigue and boosting endurance when pumping.

All in all, our Monobloc Tail range was built with “plug and play” in mind so that each front wing and tail have a balanced behavior when correctly paired together.

Each of our front wing has at least one tail recommended as a first choice, and we have also added secondary suggestions that are relevant depending on the rider’s level and the chosen discipline.

Foil Masts

The mast connects the plane (front wing, fuselage, stab) to the board.

Foil F One Masts

It will  be easier to learn wing foil or kite foil on a shorter mast.

The falls will be gentler, and you will feel more stable as you learn to get up and stay up.

A shorter mast is also ideal for sessions in shallow waters.

A long mast offers more leverage and is good for choppy conditions.

With a higher mast, you have more room to angle the foil and make aggressive turns in the waves without the foil breaching.

FOIL CONSTRUCTION & TECHNOLOGIES

We offer three types of constructions on our foils: Carbon (pre-preg and High Modulus), FCT, and Injected Carbon.

Foil Constructions F One

All our carbon hydrofoils are made from pre-preg, which makes them incredibly strong and stiff.

Some of our foils, like the EAGLE or the ESCAPE, have an added layup of High Modulus Carbon fiber that leads to even more rigidity in both bending and torsion while keeping enough comfort for any kind of practice.

Foil F One construction

Our GRAVITY and PHANTOM foils are available in both carbon and FCT (Foil Compression Technology).

FCT foils are built in fiberglass around a high-density foam core.

The wing is then covered by a thin and strong shield skin.

This F-ONE innovation offers impressive mechanical properties, making it particularly suited for foils subjected to high stresses and bending loads.

Foil F One construction

As you are riding, the difference between a carbon and FCT foil is barely noticeable.

Both have the same shape and program. FCT foils do have a bit more flex, but the performance potential on the water is very much the same.

The IC6 950 V.3 is built with the Injected Carbon Technology, consisting of an injected polymer reinforced with carbon fibers.

This technology makes these foils a lot more resistant and durable.
